The oce of International Student and Scholar Services works closely with new students to ensure a smooth transition to EKU and provides ongoing support to students through graduation.
 

• 3 day New Student Orientation at the beginning

   of each term.

   excursions at little or no cost to students.

GET SETTLED

• EKU’s Police department has over 25 ocers with a 24-hour patrol schedule on the campus. EKU

   provides a free shuttle service around campus and the EKU Police department oers an after-hours

   escort service if needed. A regional hospital is located adjacent to the EKU campus and is within

   walking distance.
• A Kentucky State Police post, fire station and an Emergency Medical Service station are all located on

   our main campus to help assure your safety as a student.

Annual International Student Association BANQUET

The International Student Association is composed of members of the international student body as well as students from across the USA. Each year, the ISA hosts an International Banquet with food and entertainment provided by the students. The ISA hosts other regular events, outings, and entertainment for its members throughout the year.

INTENSIVE ENGLISH INSTRUCTION

Eastern Kentucky University partners with ELS Educational Services to provide conditional admission for students who are academically qualified, but who don't meet our English Language proficiency requirements at the time of application to the university. We accept proof of completion of ELS Language Center's intensive English for Academic Purposes Level 112 as satisfying the requirements for English proficiency for many degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels

ELS PROGRAMS OFFER

• Individual assessments place students into one of 12 levels of instruction
• New classes start every 4 weeks
• Each level consists of 15-30 hours of teacher-led instruction per week
• Students are grouped by skill level but individual performance is tracked to ensure success
• Core classes include: Structure and Speaking Practice, Language Technology Center,

   Vocabulary Enrichment, and Reading and Writing.
• Skilled Enhancement classes focus on Listening and Note taking, Speech and Debate, and

   Advanced Academic Writing.

SCHOLARSHIPS

EKU oers two scholarships specifically for ELS Students to reward English proficiency

ESL Academic Achievement - $2,500

ESL Academic Excellence - $5,000

Annually, for up to 4 years. Granted to ELS students who complete ELS 112 within 12 months and have cumulative secondary school scores of 80% (3.0) or greater.

Annually, for up to 4 years. Granted to ELS studentswho successfully earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 orhigher in ESL levels 110-112 and have cumulativesecondary school scores of 80% (3.0) or greater.

* Students must successfully complete 15 hours per term to retain scholarship subject toavailability of funds. Not available to students under government contracts.
